UK Students and Grads Prove their Initiative at Student Rec 2011

Student Rec 2011 – we’ll look back fondly. Innovate CV is thrilled to report that the inaugural event was a success. Hosted in association with the NUS, hundreds of students and grads walked away armed with new job searching tools and insights.

The event’s speakers didn’t disappoint. Lord Jim Knight (Innovate CV, Associate Director/Shadow employment minister), Greg Dyke (BBC, former Director General), Luc Delany (Facebook, Manager of Policy), and Feargal Sharkey, (UK Music, CEO), offered practical direction and genuine encouragement. Aaron Porter (NUS, President) called for students to get involved in extra-curricular activities to develop transferable skills, and stand out.

“I came [to Student Rec] because I see a lot of my mates struggle post-graduation,” said one Management undergraduate. “They’re working jobs they could have easily scored in high-school. I don’t want to fall into the same trap.”

Speakers emphasised out-of-the-box thinking, and encouraged attendees to focus on networking strategies (both face-to-face and online). While cynicism can often be a ticket to Twitter celebrity, employers highly regard positive thinkers who can provide fresh perspectives.

The attendees enjoyed the opportunity to engage with the panel; individuals who have all experienced knockbacks and setbacks – and succeeded. The audience asked probing questions, and were rewarded with fascinating responses. Opportunities to speak one-on-one with the speakers were well taken advantage of.

The feedback was excellent. We appreciate the overwhelmingly positive reports attendees shared with us post-event, and have fully taken on board any suggestions that were made.

If you’ll allow us the opportunity to indulge, here are a few of the tweets that made our day:

Innovate CV Recruitment Event is very inspirational… Now to aim for Apple, Facebook, Google… Bring it on! #studentrec (link)

@Adam_InnovateCV Long drive down and back from Leeds was definitely worth it. Just want to say that the event you hosted was fantastic! (link)

We applaud the young attendees, and those who attend other career events, for demonstrating a real resolve not to become another statistic. Any student or graduate who put themselves out there, and demonstrates a real willingness to learn, are already positioning themselves for successful careers. They deserve industry recognition, and we have no doubt they’ll each earn it. Well done.
