Ongoing Training and Development – A Recipe for Career Success

Training and development can sometimes fall off the radar, victim to more immediate business concerns. But we would go with the approach of W. Edwards Deming who commented that as “Learning is not compulsory…neither is survival”! In our view, the short term view of putting urgent before important will compromise long term company performance. Every company needs to ensure that its workforce is fully trained and performing at optimum levels.

In our previous post we discussed where the onus for training lies, but clearly the benefits of training are felt on a corporate and individual level. In general, well trained employees are better poised to complete their tasks efficiently and are generally more loyal to their employer. Benefits accrue on a personal level as well; better trained staff are more likely to be suitable promotion candidates too.

We interviewed Benjamin Leon, Managing Partner of Bravo Lima LLP, who firmly believes that continuous development is important throughout your career.

The more skills and experiences that you have  allows you to  put yourself in a stronger position to develop your career.  Each individual needs to develop an awareness of where they need to develop and someone who has self awareness will do better than someone who has blind spots or who does not develop their weaknesses.

The dividends of ongoing earning, training and development are reaped at every stage of the career ladder. Senior management, CEOs or Finance Directors who have presentation challenges or team challenges for example, will benefit hugely from investment in ongoing training. As Brian Tracy said “Commit yourself to lifelong learning. The most valuable asses you’ll ever have is your mind and what you put into it” … and one more quote for you from Henry L Doherty: “Be a student so long as you still have something to learn, and this will mean all your life”.

    Thanks for the video. My previous employer did not emphasize training at all. If we wanted it, we’d have to pay for it. My current employer recognizes this, and offers pathways to professional development. We’re a happier organisization and group of individuals.

    I complete a foundation degree in two months. It is not much but I had hoped it would open opportunities. It hasn’t. My supervisors are …not supportive…dont allow me to build on the skills I have gained.

    What I have seen is that training and development is advocated at senior management/Director level but at middle to junior management level short term thinking wins out. i.e. If I support the development of x individual they may highlight my own developmental shortcomings and compete with me for my job in the future. The same logic is used in hiring decisions.

    For the record, I do believe in the benefits of continuous professional development, I’m just not reaping those rewards…….yet.

      Thanks for the reply, Victor. Unfortunately, some organisations have yet to embrace the concept of employee development.

      One of the main reasons could be, as you pointed out, a degree of management insecurity. Such an organisation is bound to be plagued by mismanagement, poor culture, and limited long term opportunity. I would even go so far as to question the orginsation’s long term survival…

    Nice post! The difference between urgent and important was described well! I feel any work we do need to be an important one, if you feel your doing it for urgent you will fail in all aspects. The Job searching and career development should be given “importance ” and its not URGENT. Thanks for sharing the post!
